The non-figurative Colourist section; having been taught by John Hoyland at Chelsea Arts School, I have always been intrigued by the emotive & complex nature of colour.
I explored these images first in 1964 whilst listening to music – mainly modern jazz, especially early Miles Davis, and anything on Stax & Atlantic. This provided the inspiration for the Rondo series particularly.
I began re-working these images recently, still listening to music, but a wider spectrum, from soca to Stravinsky, but still remaining loyal to Miles Davis, Stax & Atlantic. They continue to excite me.
